Who We Are
The mission of the Humane Society of Marathon County, Inc. is to relieve the suffering and abuse of animals and to foster an awareness of their importance in our community. We achieve this through leadership in compassionate care, placement, public education, humane services and example. Our focus is on the humane treatment of all living creatures.
What We Do
We are an unlimited, full admission animal shelter acting as the designated animal impound location for Marathon County. We accept any domestic animal and provide surrender, rescue, adoption and referral service for domestic animals. We strive to screen adoption applicants and adoptable pets to provide a compatible and permanent match. Temperament testing is provided prior to becoming available for adoption, and any animal presenting a threat to the safety of the public is not presented for adoption. Initial vaccinations, sterilization, and microchipping are included in the cost of adoption. We utilize reputable breed specific rescue organizations and other animal shelters for placement of adoptable animals requiring more time to find a home. We work to educate the public on humane treatment of animals, and the need to stop irresponsible breeding resulting in litters of unwanted animals. We do ask owners to help us reduce the need for euthanasia for space by assisting us in scheduling ahead to surrender a pet. We work with licensed veterinarians to provide the best health care and cleaning regimen we can within the restrictions of a non profit budget.
