Volunteer: School Based Mentoring for Big Brothers Big SistersSchool Based mentoring, involves a "Big Brother" and/or "Big Sister" volunteers providing children- "Littles"- individualized time and attention on a consistent basis, with the venue being the child's school rather than the community. Volunteers and children meet regularly during the school year- typically each week, utilizing the resources available with the school; computer labs, the library, the gym, a classroom, or the schoolyard. Whether they play board games, simply sit and talk with one another, or do a craft project, their relationship promotes a positive attitude, and academic enrichment. Volunteers can choose to work with a child in the following school districts: Abbotsford, Athens, D.C. Everest, Marathon, Merrill, Mosinee, and Wausau. Volunteers are asked to meet with their Littles once a week for 30-45 minutes at a time. During casual weekly or bi-weekly outings, filled with conversations and shared activities, they develop a relationship that helps children manage the everyday challenges that are part of "growing up." During time spent with their Big, Littles gain new skills, explore new interests and expand their experience base beyond their family or neighborhood. Activities can include, going to parks, exploring the library, hiking Rib Mountain, taking part in local events, bowling, etc. BBBSNCW encourages taking part in low-cost/no-cost experiences. Volunteers can choose to work with a child living in the following school district areas: Abbotsford, Athens, D.C. Everest, Marathon, Merrill, Mosinee, and Wausau.
